サドル氏の停戦宣言が出された直後の報道です。

BBCの特派員によると、依然、解決の糸口は見えないという。
サドル氏が本音は武装解除に乗り気ではないことと
マリキ首相がサドル氏の要請に応じていないことが問題のようだ。

The Iraqi government is due to lift a curfew in Baghdad, after Shia cleric Moqtada Sadr ordered his fighters off the streets of Iraqi cities.
イラク政府はバグダッドでの外出禁止令を解除するという。シーア派の宗教指導者、ムクタダ・サドル氏が民兵に戦いの中止を命じたためだ。

The government said the curfew would end at 0600 local time (0300 GMT), but a vehicle ban would remain in three Shia areas of the capital.
イラク政府は現地時間で6時（英国ではGMTで3時）に、外出禁止令を解除すると発表した。ただし、バグダッドの3つのシーア派居住地域では、車両での移動の禁止を継続するという。

Moqtada Sadr on Sunday told his Mehdi Army militias to stop fighting government troops.
日曜日にムクタダ・サドル氏がマハディー民兵団に対し、イラク軍への攻撃を止めるよう呼び掛けた。

The fighting has claimed more than 240 lives across the country since Tuesday.
火曜日から続いた今回の武力衝突で、240人が死亡した。

'Positive' move
「前向きな」動き

Moqtada Sadr's statement said: "Because of the religious responsibility, and to stop Iraqi blood being shed... we call for an end to armed appearances in Basra and all other provinces.
サドル氏は、声明の中で、「宗教的責任を果たすため、そしてイラク人の流血の惨事を止めるため、我々はバスラをはじめとする全ての州で、武装を解除するよう要請する」と言明した。

"Anyone carrying a weapon and targeting government institutions will not be one of us."
「武器を携帯し、政府に攻撃を仕掛ける者は我々の同胞ではない」とも述べている。

The cleric also demanded that the government apply the general amnesty law, release detainees and stop what he called illegal and random raids.
サドル氏はまた、政府に恩赦法の適用を要請し、勾留者の釈放を要求するとともに、サドル氏が言うところの違法で不意な家宅捜査も止めるよう求めた。

He also told his followers to "work with Iraqi government offices to achieve security and to file charges against those who have committed crimes".

A spokesman for Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki, Ali al-Dabbagh, told Iraq television the statement was positive.
ノウリ・マリキ首相のスポークスマンであるアリ・アル・ダバグ氏は、イラクテレビに対し、サドル氏の声明は前向きなものだと語り、
"As the government of Iraq we welcome this statement. We believe this will support the government of Iraq's efforts to impose security."

He also warned: "The government will be forced to implement the law against those who do not obey the instructions of the government and of Sadr."
一方、ダバグ氏は「政府とサドル氏の指導に従わない者に対して、政府は、法の執行を持って対処せざるを得ない」とも警告した。

'No resolution'
「解決しない」

However, Hazem al-Araji, an aide to Moqtada Sadr, told reporters that the cleric's appeal to his militias would not mean handing in weapons.
半面、サドル氏の側近であるハゼム・アル・アラジ氏が記者団に語ったところによると、サドル氏の呼び掛けは、マハディー民兵団が武器を放棄するという意味ではないという。

The BBC's Adam Brookes in Baghdad says this means the Mehdi Army will remain intact.
バグダッドで取材を続けるBBCのアダム・ブルークス特派員は、アラジ氏が語っていたことから、マハディー民兵団は無傷のままであることが分かると述べる。

He says that although the move gives Mr Maliki a chance to claim victory, the central demand has not been met and this is not a resolution of the conflict.

The curfew in Baghdad had been extended indefinitely on Saturday evening, after a day of skirmishes between security forces and Shia militiamen in the capital and Basra.
バグダッドとバスラでイラク治安部隊とシーア派民兵との小競り合いがあり、バグダッドでの外出禁止令は土曜日の夕刻まで延長されることとなった。

Coalition forces had become more involved, with US air raids in the two cities in recent days.

Estimates vary of the number of deaths since the fighting broke out.

Fighting in Baghdad has left 117 people dead over the past three days, Iraqi police told the BBC.
イラク警察がBBCに語ったところによると、ここ3日間で、バグダッドで起きた武力衝突により死亡した者は117人になるという。

In Basra, the British military has given a death toll of 50 but local medical sources report as many as 290 dead and the Iraqi army has reported killing 120 "enemy" fighters there.
バスラでは、英軍が死者数を50人だと発表している一方で、地元の医療関係者は290人は死亡しているはずと報告している。イラク軍は120人の「敵」を殺害したという。

Scores of people are believed to have been killed in other southern cities, according to Iraqi police or medical reports.

At least 77 people were killed in Kut, Nasiriya, Karbala and Hilla.
